Simone Gillespie
She never accepted compliments
She thought they were all lies
Told by those who pitied her
And wouldn’t look her in the eyes
She shook them from her shoulders
And said “no, I’m really not”
because she only saw her reflection
In the mirror warped by lies
Told by bullies on the playground
“Why are you crying, Four Eyes?”
Once she was old enough,
She traded in her glasses
Not recognized by anyone
In any of her classes
With her thick eyeliner
She hid behind her new facade
Her fear and worry intensified
Afraid they’d see she was a fraud
And “Four Eyes” would return
She never accepted compliments
She thought they were all lies
Told by those who pitied her
And wouldn’t look her in the eyes
She shook them from her shoulders
And said “no, I’m really not”
because she only saw her reflection
In the mirror warped by lies
Told by bullies on the playground
“Why are you crying, Four Eyes?”
Once she was old enough,
She traded in her glasses
Not recognized by anyone
In any of her classes
With her thick eyeliner
She hid behind her new facade
Her fear and worry intensified
Afraid they’d see she was a fraud
And “Four Eyes” would return
